How to Travel to the Statue of Liberty in New-York
The Statue of Liberty is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument maintained by the U.S. National Park Service. The monument occupies two islands, Liberty Island, where the statue is, and nearby Ellis Island. The only way to travel to the monument is on a ferry operated by a company authorized by the National Park Service. There are two ferry embarkation points, one in New Jersey and one in Manhattan.
Step 1. Reserve your tickets online or by phone from Statue Cruises.
Step 2. Pick up your ticket from the ticket office at your chosen departure location, which will either be Battery Park in lower Manhattan or Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. Ferries depart from Battery Park stop at Liberty Island first, then they visit Ellis Island before returning to Battery Park.Ferries from Jersey City make a loop that stops at Ellis Island first.
Step 3. Be prepared to wait in line and go through security clearance. The security screening is similar to the type you go through to board a commercial airliner. In peak season the wait time can be hours - this is an extremely popular landmark for both U.S. and international tourists. Autumn and winter are the best time to visit if you want to avoid longer lines and waiting times.
Step 4. Depart on the ferry before 2 p.m. if you're visiting the crown of the statue. There are several daily departures, but after 2 p.m. you will only have enough time to visit the pedestal, not the crown. If you do visit the crown, keep in mind that there is no elevator, so be prepared to climb in a long - over 350 steps - narrow, windowless stairwell.
Step 5. If you're taking public transportation to the ferry terminals, take the 1, 4, 5, or R/W subway lines to lower Manhattan, or the M15 or M6 bus lines. All of these routes have stops near Battery Park at the tip of Lower Manhattan.
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail has a stop at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, as does the Central Avenue bus from Journal Square Terminal. There is a shuttle bus from the light rail station to the ferry slip.
